G20: Saudi Arabia, Riyadh Summit Highlights

“G20 members represent around 80% of the world’s economic output, two-thirds of global population and three-quarters of international trade. The G20 members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico,  Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union (EU).” (Source: G20.Org, G20 Participants)

G20 Summit was led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which was held virtually on November 21-22, 2020, chaired by His Majesty King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The Group of 20 nation (G20) is the leading forum for international economic cooperation, wherein leaders and representatives gather to discuss financial and socioeconomic issues and propose impactful solutions for the whole world. Moreover, one of the highlights of the summit is nations efforts on confronting the Novel Corona Virus (Covid19).

Presidential Agenda

G20 Presidency theme is “Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century for All”. The theme aims to overcome the current challenges and realize opportunities of the 21st century for all by empowering people, safeguarding the planet, and shaping new frontiers (Presidential Agenda @ g20.org)

· Empowering the People: Create conditions in which all people, especially women and youth, can live, work, and thrive

· Safeguarding the Planet: Foster collective efforts to protect our commons.

· Shaping New Frontiers: Adopt long-term and bold strategies to utilize and share benefits of innovation

at the end of the two-day summit, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in his closing remarks thank the G20 for their active participation and their success in sending out a message of hope and reassurance to citizens and all people around the world through the Final Communique of the Leaders’ Summit. Towards the end of the closing remarks, King Salman handed over the G20 presidency to Italy, which will chair next year’s summit.

We have upheld our commitment to continue to work together to rise to the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to safeguard lives and livelihoods and protect the most vulnerable groups. We have adopted important policies that will achieve recovery all the way to an economy that is resilient, sustainable, inclusive, and balanced. These policies will also maintain the momentum to make the global trade system work for all, and create the conditions to achieve sustainable growth.”
